The Portuguese Culture & Historical Center of Hawaii is a 501c3 non-profit, non-partisan organization.
PCHC was established in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2017 as a focal point for Portuguese culture and tradition in Hawaii.
Most of the Portuguese immigrants coming to Hawaii were from the Azores and Madeira. They journeyed in search of a better life and a vision to some day own land.
For many, the journey was 180 days at sea with many trying moments. While at sea, there were deaths, births and weddings.
Hawaii has a long history of Portuguese immigration starting with the arrival of the "Priscilla" in 1878.
Hundreds or Portuguese immigrants sought to make the islands their home.
Upon arrival, the Priscilla's passengers were initially quarantined, then were processed to Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island to work on Plantation sugar cane fields.
Most of these folks traveled to Hawaii on three-year contracts to work on plantations. After completing their contractual obligations, some Portuguese immigrant workers migrated to California.
